Matthieu Pialoux

“As an architect I design places, imagine three-dimensional spaces and objects from two-dimensional plans. In painting the process is similar. When I paint a subject, an object or a landscape, I am tempted to make cuts, axonometries, sometimes facades. These architectural elements are tools that allow me to compose and organize the painting. Then comes the phase of pictorial experimentation, more free and extravagant. Finally the colors and forms come back. They converge, sometimes come together in opposition.

My compositions go back and forth: between the two-dimensional object and the three-dimensional one, between the figurative and the abstract, between the constructed form and the free one. Memories, dreams or testimonies, my work is directly influenced by the landscape, the environment and the geographical context in which I find myself.”
